HIGH EXPENDITURE ON FUNERALS

Every society has its pattern of mourning the dead, but the pattern used by some ethnic groups in Ghana leaves much to be desired, thus the high expenditure most families spend just to celebrate the dead. High expenditure on funerals has been on the increase, especially among some ethnic groups in Ghana. The high expenses are normally made just to portray the financial  and social status of the dead person or the relatives of the dead person. Many families overburden themselves with buying two new clothes, thus one for the funeral and the other for thanksgiving service.Photographs of the dead person are also printed on 'T' shirts which family members wore during funeral celebration.
Also,it has become the norm for most families to preserve the corpse in the mortuary for a longer period with the intention of waiting for relations to come down from abroad, and this implies that the family will have to pay more money to the hospital where the corpse is kept.
In addition to this, most families spend huge sums of money buying expensive clothes and coffins which is used to bury the dead, while some even go to the extent of importing expensive coffins from overseas just to bury the dead.
Another high expenditure on funerals is the providing of foods and entertainment for mourners, sympathizers and the hiring of bands, sound system to entertain mourners. The owners of these band seizes that opportunity to charge high fees and this add to the cost of expenses on the funeral.
Wake- keeping is also another celebration that adds to the high cost on funerals.During wake- keeping, choirs are hired and bands played throughout the wake- keeping period.Expensive perfume are sprayed on the corpse and in some instances the dresses of the corpse are changed from time to time, while wake is kept.
Funeral expenses can be reduced,if families desist from keeping the corpse in the mortuary for a longer period,to save the family of paying high hospital bills. The money could be used to cater for the members of the family who are poor.
Printing of  'T 'Shirts and photographs can be avoided since the funeral cloth alone is enough for the funeral celebration and music can also be provided by a local group choir or any singing group in the church to reduce the expenditure.
Moreover, buying of expensive clothes and perfumes can also be avoided so as to reduce the funeral expenses. Also families who have now resulted to making funeral announcements in almost all the media should desist from it,because one media can be chosen for the funeral announcement to reduce the financial burdens on family members after the funeral.
